What is SMARTconsult?

SMARTconsult is an econsultation system designed by practising GPs to meet the real-world needs of general practice — safely, affordably, and with your team in control.

Practices can select from over 70 structured econsultations and toggle each one on or off as needed. You can also set them to automatically activate at 8am and deactivate at 6pm to meet NHS core hours guidance.

It has already processed over 500,000 consults in over 20 GP Practices since 2018 - and is now available to try free for 3 months, with full access to all features, free technical support, and regular updates included.

Why SMARTconsult works

SMARTconsult was developed in response to the challenges we faced running multiple practices and managing over 100,000 patient interactions a year. Many digital consultation systems were not designed with the day-to-day realities of UK general practice in mind. Too often, we found systems lacked the flexibility, clinical structure, or feedback mechanisms to truly support patients and staff. This meant longer forms, less relevant questions, and additional admin. We built SMARTconsult to solve these problems — a system that’s clinically intelligent, easy for patients to use, and shaped by the real needs of practices. It works because we built it for the realities we live every day.

Practice-Controlled

You can switch individual econsultations on or off at any time depending on your capacity, local priorities, or workforce availability. There are over 70 clinical templates for a range of conditions and you can chose the ones you want to use.

Clinically Structured

Each template is built around the clinical condition, with focused questions, red flags and relevant history – so you’re not interpreting paragraphs of free text. It gives you a sensible summary that actually helps with triage or planning care.

Red Flag Logic

If a patient reports a red flag symptom, they’re automatically advised to attend A&E or 111. The practice receives the consult so that you can demonstrate safe care navigation (this can be inserted into the medical record).

Pharmacy First ready

SMARTconsult filters patients presenting with one of the seven Pharmacy First conditions. If eligible, it provides a direct booking link to their local pharmacy – without the patient having to go through the practice.

QOF/IIF Support

Patients are asked to submit theirweight, BP, smoking status and FFT response at the end of each consult. This helps you collect useful public health data with no extra admin.

NHS Compliance

With recent NHSE and BMA updates, SMARTconsult has been built to ensure your practice remains in full control. You’re the data controller, and we process patient data securely and under your instruction, inline with UK GDPR. A Data Processing Agreement is in place, and integration with Optum and SystmOne is underway. We’re aligned with NHS guidance around structured data and Pharmacy First referrals.

AI Support

SMARTconsult is powered by embedded AI that ensures every question asked is clinically appropriate, safe, and aligned with the latest NICE guidance. The system uses intelligent logic to dynamically select the most relevant, concise questions based on the condition selected — cutting out unnecessary detail and focusing only on what matters for clinical decision-making.

Unlike static forms or generic templates, SMARTconsult’s AI-driven design ensures that each consultation is tailored, structured, and condition-specific. This reduces the burden on patients and staff, avoids duplication, and produces cleaner, more actionable summaries for clinicians.
